This collection of archival inkjet prints is a catharsis. My photos explore perfectionistic tendencies that manifest in the body as a freeze fear response in my digestive system. I photographed discarded clothes that I froze in subzero temperatures. I printed these photos onto gauze which I then froze and photographed as well. The cycle of freezing, photographing, gauze printing the images, and then photographing the frozen gauze images, is a digestive metaphor for my experiences with perfectionism and how it has affected my body physically. I found inspiration in Laura Letinsky’s To Want For Nothing where she works with waste, stains, and her old photographs to digest the work she had made up until her photo series was created.
The addition of mirrors is intended to confuse the viewer and make it difficult to know what is real and what is only a reflection. Creating images that appear heavily edited in post-production when they in fact are not, speaks to how we create outer shells that appear perfect while what’s hiding out of frame, or in the mirrors, is less polished or possibly even sinister. I consider motifs and themes from horror and science fiction media as I process the horrific effects of not being able to eat for three months.
